I talk about consistency a lot with my in-person clients. About the consistency of showing up, putting in the work on their own, and consistency in habits. While this consistency requires discipline and some hard work, I think everyone can agree that consistency over perfection is the key to sustained fitness and health. We all get caught in the search for perfection and oftentimes give up in frustration or overwhelm when we do not achieve it. Life will always throw curveballs—work demands, family obligations, unexpected illnesses—and if we rigidly cling to an ideal plan, we risk feeling defeated when things don’t go as envisioned. If we do not have flexibility with our vision, our vision can be what ends up taking us down. Dedication to a plan is admirable but when that plan goes awry we cannot let it derail us. If we do, we will inevitably end up in the same place over and over again. Planning, making sure all pieces are perfect to start, then quitting when the pieces are no longer perfectly lined up.

As we approach the holiday season, it’s a perfect time to incorporate this mindset. Let’s aim to create plans that include room for adjustments, allowing us to celebrate our efforts rather than just the outcomes. By focusing on small, consistent actions, we can sustain our health and fitness without getting overwhelmed. It’s all about finding joy in the process and recognizing that every step forward, no matter how imperfect, is still a step in the right direction. Let’s embrace that “perfect imperfection” together!
